Water is a very vital component of a healthy diet. In addition to other healthy food choices, how much water you consume can make the difference between maintaining good health and having to deal with medical conditions like obesity, hypertension, diabetes and even arthritis. Water makes up about 60% of the human body. It is a primary component of your cells and tissues; as such, its importance for daily existence cannot be overemphasized.

Technically, nearly everything one ingests contains water, but you can save your body the extra energy needed to extract water from foods and beverages by just drinking more clean water. So, in your quest for a healthier and more fabulous you, remember to hydrate more.

The following are a few of the functions of water in your body:

*Fluid Balance: drinking enough water to maintain the body’s fluid balance is essential for the transportation of nutrients and waste products in and out of the body. Drinking water often will help you stay free from dehydration – by taking at least 1.5 liters of water daily, you replenish the water your body loses through sweat, urine, feces, etc. Hydrating regularly will also aid digestion and prevent constipation.

*Proper Kidney Functions: Water helps you maintain healthy kidneys, by helping them to excrete all the waste products accumulated in the body. If your urine is dark yellow or amber, you might need to increase your water intake.

*Control Calories: Most weight-watchers can attest that substituting beverages (especially sugary drinks) for water significantly reduces calorie intake. It’s no magic trick; drinking more water would make you feel full, and consequently cause you to eat less. Also, food with high water content tends to look larger; its higher volume requires more chewing, and it is absorbed more slowly by the body, which helps you feel full for longer. Water-rich foods include fruits, vegetables, broth-based soups, oatmeal and beans.

*Healthy Skin: Your skin contains plenty of water, and functions as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss. Water helps you develop glowing, clear and wrinkle-free skin. Clean water is a natural moisturizer that keeps the skin hydrated and helps to flush out impurities from your skin.

*Physical Fitness: Water speeds up your metabolism and is important for regulating body temperature. Drinking water will also keep your joints well lubricated and prevent muscle fatigue which can occur when the body loses too much water, especially during exercise sessions. In a nutshell, drinking water keeps you physically fit.
